Abstract/Summary:
This is a report on the translation of Chapter Ten and Eleven of Critical Thinking,Reading, and Writing: A Brief Guide to Argument. The aim of this translation report is to analyze how to translate long sentences from English to Chinese under the guidance of Constructivist Translatology. The source text is a textbook, edited by Sylvan Barnet,a renowned literary critic and a Shakespeare scholar in America, and Hugo Bedau,a leading anti-death-penalty scholar. The book is designed to help students build their own way of thinking and improve their argumentative ability. It contains many cases about critical thinking, reading and writing, and stresses the new approach of contemporary argument.Since the publication of the book, the book has been published for nine consecutive editions.Translating this book will help people monitor, challenge and criticize their way of thinking, and then correct the possible biases and parochialism. Therefore,in this report, from the perspective of differences between English and Chinese sentence structure, with the help of Constructivist Translatology, the translator explains translation phenomena in translation practice, chooses theoretical support to translation methods and skills, and summarizes the techniques used in translation practice. In the translation process, considering coherence, logic and expression preference of Chinese, the translator finds that after having a comprehensive understanding of the whole sentence, the translator herself should not be restricted in the original sentence structure, but restructure the sentence in conformity to Chinese sentence patterns when doing translation.Restructuring sentences consists of several approaches, but in this report, only four will be discussed, including pre-embedding,cutting,reversing and combination.Generally speaking, these strategies have unique advantages and complement each other, which can be used separately, and sometimes can be altogether applied when needed.
