A Report On The Translation Of Shanghailand

The report is based on the translation work of Shanghailand(2017).The whole book(22 chapters and 25789 English words),written by James Dargan who is an English novelist,is chosen to be translated and the difficulties and key problems in translation will be discussed in this report.Shanghailand,set in Shanghai,1930 s,describes the love and hate of Chinese and westerners living in Shanghai and tellss how they lived before and during the Battle of Shanghai.Shanghailand is considered as “non-native language writing” and this kind of translation is defined as “textless back translation”.The debate between domestication and foreignization has never ceased since “cultural turn” in translation was advanced.But Chinese scholars hold that two strategies can be supplementary.Against the background,such a trend towards compromise and integration of domestication and foreignization could provide a brand-new perspective for the translation of Shanghailand,because textless back translation as a special approach of translation could not avoid such issures as language and culture.Hence,I am willing to make an attempt to explore the proper translation ways of Shanghailand with a standpoint of combination of domestication and foreignization,by analyzing cases in the translation of Shanghailand to make contribution to the textless back translation.This report is divided into five chapters: chapter one is the task description including the introduction to the book and its author,as well as the significance of translation;chapter two is the process description including preparation,while-translation and proofreading;chapter three is the theoretical basis for the translating Shanghailand,mainly discussing textless back translation and the debate between domestication and foreignization and then touching upon integrative strategy of domestication and foreignization held by Chinese scholars;chapter four is the case study,analyzing how the above integrative strategy applied in cases;chapter five is the conclusion including experiences and lessons as well as limitations.
