Mental disease carries a lot of meaning in literary works.It contains multiple values of emotion,humanity,culture,society and politics.This paper explored the metaphorical content and cultural significance of the mental illness in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novels.This article is divided into three parts:introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part is the introduction.The research of the status quo of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the brief definition of mental illness in his novels.And the research method,research purpose and meaning of this article.The second chapter discussed the image of mental illness in novels.There are various forms of mental illness.And each of the disease has their own connotations which includes love,psycho and time.The third chapter analyzed the mental illness's metaphor in the novels,combineing historical issues to explain authoritarianism,social situation and national ethos of Latin America.The forth chapter used the theory of psychoanalysis,humanism and existentialist philosophy to explain the reason why mental diseases appeared in the novels.Chapter fifth discussed the relationship between mental illness and society,history,politics and culture.Put an eye on the primitive tendency of mental illness,the religious meaning of the disease metaphor and the reflection culture extended by the mental illness.And the last part is the conclusion,which concluded the meaning and value of mental disaase in Marquez's novels.
