| This dissertation makes a study of the dramatic music in Verdi’s opera Don Carlos.The introduction summarizes the previous research and explains the research perspective of this paper.The first chapter analyzes the composing procession of the opera in three creative stages and explains how the opera creation submitted to the dramatical requirements.Besides,compares different dramatic structures of the different versions of the opera.The second chapter analyzes the differences of the characterization and scene description between Verdi’s opera and Schiller’s play to illustrate the different requirement between opera and play.This chapter also analyzes how scenes are abridged,supplemented and modified during the adaptation of drama into opera,and explains the reasons.Besides,analyzes the differences of the same roles and explains character’s deletion,additions and modifications.The third chapter analyzes the specific dramatic functions of the music in the opera Don Carlos from four aspects: characterization,atmosphere description,plot promotion,music structure unification.Characterization explains how music characterize the roles of the opera.Specific arias and duets are analyzed by script and music.Atmosphere description shows how music set up atmosphere in specific scenes.Plot promotion shows how music promotes actions in the opera by the duets,trios,quartets and chorus.Music structure unification concentrates on the whole tone of the opera and the technique of“theme reprise”.Finally,this paper summarizes the complexity of confliction in the opera,the drama conception of Verdi in his middle and late period,adaption of libretto and the dramatic functions of the music. |
