A Report On The Translation Of Chapter 6 Of Legal Translation Explained

This report is written on the basis of the author’s translation of Chapter six of Legal Translation Explained,an academic work coauthored by Professor Enrique Alcaraz Varówith Professor Brian Hughes.This book,principally written to those non-native speakers of English who are taking their first step in the translation of legal English,makes a comprehensive and systematic explanation to legal translation from the perspectives of linguistics,jurisprudence and translatology.So far,the book has no Chinese version.In the book,Chapter six expounds some genres in the translation of legal English and corresponding translation methods.As an important theoretical work on legal translation,this book bears many features remarkable in academic works and dominant in legal texts.It is thus undeniable that the translation should adhere to academic translation principles and legal translation principles.In this report,the author first introduces the background of the translation task as well as the nature and features of this book,and then exemplifies this translation from lexical and syntactical perspectives in accordance with principles of academic translation and legal translation.Through the analysis of this translation practice,the author summarizes the translation principles followed by such kind of translation as well as main challenges or difficulties in the translation and the corresponding solutions,which may help the reader have a better understanding of scholarly legal translation.In a nutshell,the report is expected to provide some referential experience for future researchers who are interested in analyzing or studying scholarly legal translations,or for some translators in this field.
