A Research On The Translation Of Logical Relation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Translation material in this translation report is an excerpt of Letters to A Law Student: A Guide to Studying Law at University written by Nicholas J.Mc Bride who is a law professor in Faculty of Law of University of Cambridge.In his 32 letters,he has introduced almost all the information a law student needs,including whether a student should choose law,how to study law,what law is,how to write thesis,how to pass interview for a law job.The whole procedure of pre-preparation,translation process and quality control is successfully finished under the guidance and help of my teachers and friends.In pre-preparation part,the author reads the source text again and again so as to gain a deep understanding and further get a clear picture of the text feature.According to Skopos Theory proposed by Hans Vermeer,the choice of translation strategy lies in the skopos of translation.By translating this book,the author hopes to convey the information in this book faithfully and completely to her target readers.In response to this skopos,the main strategy adopted by the translator is literal translation.Meanwhile,free translation is also applied when necessary.In the translation practice,the report finds that most of the logical relations can be transferred by literal translation.But it is not a universally applicable method as understanding obstacles or even misunderstanding might arise.In addition,not all logical relations are presented directly by words.Some of them may hide in lines and wait to be discovered by translator through her analysis under particular contexts.Accordingly,the translator should not only be faithful to the source text but also adjust her translation to respond the practical demand.By doing so,the target text can function as the translator expects.The author hopes this translation report may contribute to the future translation of similar text.
