The martial arts film is a kind of film genre which has originated in China and had ever experienced a thriving era.At the same time,as a Chinese native film genre which has strong influence and identification in the world,the martial arts film has formed a relatively fixed type elements and programs which can also be imitated in terms of the background of Jiang Hu,the concept of chivalry,the system of Kung Fu,and the personal affections and so on.It has already become one of the most mature commercial films in China.In its development,there are also many filmmakers have made bold explorations towards the martial arts films,such as King Hu,Bruce Lee,Jackie Chan,Woo Ping Yuen,Cheh Chang,Hark Tsui,etc.These predecessors created different styles of martial arts films,presenting various and bizarre martial arts films on the screen.However,after experiencing nearly one hundred years of development,the martial arts films have gradually become rigid and tacky.Nowadays,it no longer dominates the Chinese film market.Since Tsui Hark's "The Butterfly Murders" was released,martial arts movies have gradually moved towards authoring exploration,in order to carry out types of self-help renewal.In recent years,many martial arts films on this type have made various attempts from such perspectives as the aesthetic characteristics,styles,narrative strategies,theme selection.These explorations have also made,to some extent,some achievements.After persistent and long efforts,numerous directors have acquired the ability to direct films featuring their own styles.However,they do not help the martial arts movies which are endowed with Chinese characteristics and strong cultural identity to achieve qualitative leap.Up till now,martial arts films have still not been able to find a breakthrough in the jungle of various commercial genres.As a director with fewer works,Xu Haofeng has successively directed the "The Sword Identity","The Master","Judge Archer","The Hidden Sword" and several other excellent martial arts movies.Through these works,he created a new,changing,nostalgic arena.From the director's works we can see they also contain a large number of past events on the martial arts such as boxing theories and rules of Jianghu,line style display.The action style in his films is also more close to the traditional martial arts skills.Xu Haofeng,as a martial arts film director,although in the downfall period of martial arts,has still continued to explore the possibilities of martial arts movies.In today's movie market,martial arts movies no longer exist,Xu Haofeng,with a unique author's style,is still on the martial arts movie market to explore this commercial type concerning the action scenes,character settings,mentoring relations,rivers and lakes and other concepts level,making a series of bold and original attempt.These attempts not only indicate an individual breakthrough in the movie market,but also to some extent,but also promote the type of martial arts movie to update and evolute.Xu Haofeng's style of works is not simply derived from the film art.The impact brought by the multiple identities that the imitate.However,it is of great significance to analyze how it expands its boundaries with martial arts films.Due to his complex industry background,and his films are adapted from their own literary works,this article combines the film works influenced by literary and other artistic theories,as well as the author's complex sources of the film,and through excavating the deep reasons behind,so as to summarize the aesthetic characteristics of Xu Haofeng's martial arts film authoring path and reflect on the breakthrough of martial arts film type.
