Confucianism And Corporate Social Responsibility

In the context of rapid economic development,a series of corporate social responsibility events gradually appear in the public's view,and the government and the public are increasingly pressing for enterprises to assume corporate social responsibility.At the same time,the business community also aware that actively fulfilling corporate social responsibility is an important means of enhancing their reputation and image.Therefore,in recent years,corporate social responsibility has gradually become a hot issue in academic research.Different from literature focused on economic motivation,economic consequences of the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility,this study attempts to explore the informal system of individual moral cultivation and corporate ethics culture under the cultural background.Confucian culture has occupied a place in traditional Chinese culture since ancient times.The Confucian philosophy contains not only the wisdom of the common people living on the human beings,but also the value orientation,management approach and so on,as an important factor which can't be ignored when business decision is made.Therefore,this paper studies the relationship between Confucianism and corporate social responsibility.From the perspective of culture which is the informal institution,we examine the impact of Confucian cultural background on corporate social responsibility.Using the data of Chinese listed companies during the 11-year period from 2006 to 2016 as a sample of the study,this article makes comprehensive use of theoretical analysis and empirical research.The results show that the Confucian traditional culture has a significant positive impact on corporate social responsibility.The larger the number of Confucian schools within a certain range of registered companies,the better the corporate social responsibility performance.We also found that Confucian culture and overseas culture have taken effect of cultural integration.The integration of both has strengthened the impact of corporate social responsibility.Compared with resource-redundant enterprises,resource-poor enterprises can better reflect Confucian culture's own ethical value,the role of Confucianism in promoting the performance of corporate social responsibility is even better.Compared with private enterprises,the role of Confucian traditional culture in promoting the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility is even more obvious in state-owned enterprises.The research in this article extends the theoretical cognition of the economic value of culture and the predetermined factor of corporate social responsibility from the perspective of informal system,and also provides empirical evidence for the impact of Confucian traditional culture on corporate social responsibility.The wisdom of doing things in Confucianism has many points of convergence with the modern theory of corporate social responsibility,including Confucianism in examining corporate social responsibility decision-making,which is more local in studying the impact mechanism of corporate social responsibility in China.At the same time,based on the Chinese traditional culture to analyze internal motivation of corporate social responsibility performance,adding the factor of enterprises to take the responsibility of social,and it has important reference for listed companies to choose the appropriate governance mechanism in Chinese cultural context and the Foreign capital to enter China,and the integration of Chinese and Foreign-funded enterprises.
