English Curriculum Standard for compulsory education published in 2017 clearly points out that English curriculum on the stage of compulsory education is equipped with both instrumental and humanistic features.Moreover,the English curriculum in unity of instrument and humanity will help lay the foundation for students' life-long development.However,for various reasons,such as exam pressures,teaching force,teaching conditions and so forth,the educational concept with utilitarian,practical and instrumental features still has a great influence on teaching,which contributes to the result that students are strong on exam but weak on language application and lack of wide knowledge and individual development.Therefore,it is imperative to strengthen humanistic education in English teaching,which has the vital significance for improving students' humanistic qualities and satisfying their needs of healthy and integrated development.Based on the humanistic teaching theory and the theory of human comprehensive development and mainly according to Yang Shuzi's interpretation on humanistic education,the author tries to study the first question from six dimensions which are students' knowledge about humanism,humanistic qualities of English teacher,humanistic resources in English textbooks,teaching methods and means,human oriented evaluation to students and students' extra-curricular activities.The first question is:(1)What is the current situation of humanistic education in high-school English teaching of Liuzhou? And then on the basis of the results from the first question,the author will explore the second question:(2)What are the main influencing factors contributing to this current situation?The subjects participating in this study are 300 students and 60 teachers from Liuzhou High School,Liuzhou NO.2 High School and Liujiang Middle School which are all belong to demonstrative high schools.The research was carried out in the way of questionnaires and interviews.The author used SPSS 20.0 statistical software to process data and then interviewed three students and two teachers from research subjects for a further research.The results show that:(1)The current situation of humanistic education in high-school English teaching of Liuzhou is not so satisfactory and it still has much room for improvement.Specifically,although most English teachers have relatively high humanistic quality,the level of most students' humanistic knowledge,the situation of humanistic resources in teaching materials,students' evaluation to the teaching methods and means of their English teachers and the situation on human oriented evaluation to students need to improve since the mean scores of these aspects are around 3.5,a medium level.What's more,the standard deviation scores of these aspects are around 0.5,a pretty low score,which illustrates that a majority of students' evaluation on these aspects are more uniform.In addition,the situation of students' extra-curricular activities on English is so bad.Its mean scores are below 3.0,which indicates that the extra-curricular activities on English are much less and they do not obtain enough attention.(2)The main influencing factors contributing to the current situation include the humanistic environment of school,English teacher,teaching material and teaching pressures.Among these influencing factors,teaching pressures have the greatest impact on this current situation,furthermore,its impact is quite predominant as its mean scores are over 4.0 and its standard deviation scores are below 0.5.In addition,in teaching pressures,the influence from the pressure of college entrance examination is extremely predominant.(3)Both students and teachers hope that the exam-oriented trend in English teaching should be weakened and much more attention should be paid on students' all-round development.At last,based on the results above,the author put forward some suggestions from the aspects of humanistic environment of school,English teacher,teaching material and English evaluation system:(1)School creates a sound environment of material and spiritual culture for students and teachers,and school should attach importance to humanistic care towards teachers.(2)Teachers not only need to cultivate students' humanistic qualities and facilitate their all-round development but also need to improve the humanistic qualities of their own.(3)Teachers should guide students to study in ways of exploration,experiencing and cooperation.(4)Integrate more Chinese culture into teaching material and develop students' capability of intercultural communication.(5)The English teaching materials should adopt more classic papers from the fields of humanities and social science.(6)Teachers and students participate in developing curriculum resources together.(7)Set rational evaluative system.(8)Adjust the contents and ways of the English test in college entrance examination and promote students' integrated development on English ability.
