A Comparable Corpus-based Analysis Of Collocational Patterns In English Translations Of Business News

The corpus-based study of lexical collocation is one of the hotspots in linguistics and translation studies in recent years.Traditional lexical research mainly depends on researchers' experience,while the corpus-based approach is based on the retrieval,statistics,and analysis of linguistic data,which make the results more objective and reliable.With the emergence and application of modern corpora,lexical research has been pushed to the forefront of lexicology,linguistic research,and language teaching.Appropriate collocation has been regarded as an important standard of linguistic organization and has become an important linguistic indicator to distinguish between translated and non-translated languages.The previous study in this field has been mainly focused on the literary texts,while the present paper intends to investigate the English translation of business news.Based on the corpus methodology,the collocational features in translated texts of business news are to be analyzed.More specifically,a comparable approach is employed to explore some of the typical features of collocation in the translated business news.The author builds two small corpora composed of original English texts and translated English texts on business news.Corpus tools like Antconc and BFSU collocator 1.0 are used to retrieve ten high-frequency nouns.After that,the frequency of collocates and colligation distribution of the nodes are investigated.The main research questions of this study include:(1)Compared with the non-translated business news,does the number of collocations for the node words in translated business English news tend to be limited?(2)Are there significant differences in the colligation distribution of the nouns? Based on the statistics of the number of collocates,and the classification of colligation,it is found that translated business English news presents a certain simplification trend.It is found that 83% of the nodes have a very limited number of collocate words than the original text.In terms of colligation distribution,there are no significant differences between the two corpora overall.The translated business news basically conforms to English grammar.But it is found that the number of V+N colligation's occurrence in translated texts is slightly lower than that in the native text.
