A Study Of Metaphor Translation In Chinese Government Work Report(2017) From The Perspective Of Critical Metaphor Analysis

As a rhetorical device and a cognitive method,metaphor plays an important role in political texts.Chinese Government Work Report is a typical political text which always uses metaphors to express abstract political concepts and convey the administrative concept of our party.With the improvement of the comprehensive national strength,the international community pays more attention to China' s development.Chinese Government Work Report has become an important channel for the world to know more about China.During the process of translation,metaphors in Chinese Government Work Report pose difficulties and challenges to translators.Given that,this paper presents a study on metaphor translation in the Chinese Government Work Report in 2017 from the perspective of Critical Metaphor Analysis.Under the guidance of critical metaphor analysis,the thesis adopts corpus concordance software AntConc to conduct a fuzzy search and employs Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit(MIPVU)for a comprehensive identification and classification and conducts a systematic analysis of metaphors in Chinese Government Work Report(2017),combing a quantitative analysis with a qualitative analysis.And then,the thesis discusses the purposes of metaphors used in Chinese Government Work Report(2017).After a careful analysis,there are nine types of metaphors in Chinese Government Work Report(2017).They are construction metaphors,journey metaphors,war metaphors,orientation metaphors,human-being metaphors,machine metaphors,plant metaphors,circle metaphors and family metaphors.There are seven purposes of metaphors used in Chinese Government Work Report(2017).They are general rhetorical purpose,heuristic purpose,predictive purpose,empathetic purpose,aesthetic purpose,ideological purpose and mythic purpose.At last,through analyzing the Chinese version and English version of Chinese Government Work Report(2017)both selected from official website,the thesis summarizes three concrete translation techniques via detailed translation case analyses,including reproducing the same SL image in the TL,conversion of SL metaphor to sense and deletion.It's hoped that the analysis of metaphors in Chinese Government Work Report and the translation methods concluded in this thesis can provide guidance for the English learners and instructors and the translators engaged in political text translation.
