A Report On The Translation Program By The National Audit Office

This translation program by Beijing Bestlingual Translation Company is a fairly big one.In this program,there are three documents needed to be translated.The major responsibility of the author was to do translation and self-review.In consideration of the specialty of the documents and high requirements of the customer,relevant CAT tools were applied to improve translation efficiency and quality.Translation quality is related to many factors,and quality control runs through the whole process of the translation program.In the initial stage,the first thing was to analyze customer requirements through the source text,target readers,and translation purposes,and to analyze program requirements through the aspects of original resources,project management,and communication;secondly,to make a reasonable translation plan and a contingency plan based on the analyses of customer needs and program requirements,the purpose was to deliver a reliable target text within limited time.Again,according to the translation plan,preliminary preparations were carried out.These preparations were made by using ABBYY Aligner,SDL MultiTerm Desktop,and SDL MultiTerm Convert to process the original resources such as glossary and reference files into available resources for CAT tools,thereby improving working efficiency and translation quality.When the translation work was officially started,a new project was created in SDL Trados Studio.During translation,problems were inevitable,such as how to determine the definition of technical terms,how to standardize the abbreviation of certain organizations,how to translate complex sentences,and how to deal with the problem of doing translation without adequate background knowledge.In addition,CAT was not perfect,some problems have occurred during the translation process,such as missing superscript and format errors.After the translation work was completed,it was necessary to maintain and upgrade the language assets,i.e.Terminology Database,Translation Memory Database because the value of the language assets would continue to increase.At present,the demand for translation speed and translation quality is increasing,and the traditional translation mode cannot meet such demand.In addition,enabled by the development of computer technology,a growing number of translators start to turn to Machine Translation with the purpose of improving working efficiency.However,Machine Translation cannot be intelligible enough because natural language is flexible,and any advanced computer has no cognitive or comprehensive ability as human beings.Therefore,in many situations,the translation quality of Machine Translation is unsatisfying,so the development of computer technology and corpus technology offer grounds for the rising of CAT.And compared with pure Machine Translation,CAT is more suitable for improving translation quality.
