A Report On The Translation Of "The Women" And "The Woman Of The House" By William Trevor

The translation task “The Women” and “The Woman of the House”,written by William Trevor,published on The New Yorker,are two short stories.They are altogether 13,000 words and both don't have Chinese versions.Based on American linguist and translation theorist Eugene A.Nida's theory on functional equivalence in translation,the thesis comments on translating practice of“The Woman” and “The Woman of the House” and tries to prove the applicability of functional equivalence theory on translation of short stories.Short story translation is a type of literary translation.On the one hand,it requires translator to transmit the message and reproduce the artistic style of the original work.On the other hand,it coincides with the feature of functional equivalence theory,which emphasizes readers' response.The translation materials for the thesis are both rich in language,coherent in content.There are exquisite plots and vivid characters for description.Therefore,it is of great significance to convey the original text appropriately and express the author's emotion to meet the standards of functional equivalence theory.The report is to analyze the difficult points from the lexical,syntactic,stylistic levels,elaborate the importance of using functional equivalence in translating stories and provides reference to future study.The thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter I introduces the translation background,significance,author and the original texts.Chapter II describes the translation process which includes preparation before translation,description of translation and proofreading the translation.Chapter III mainly introduces the theoretical framework which is the functional equivalence theory.Chapter IV is the case analysis.Chapter V is the conclusion,which summarizes gains and limitations.
