A Translation Report On Research Articles Based On Functionalist Genre Features

With the enhancement of globalization and international academic exchanges,the translation of research article plays a more and more important role for the global academic interaction.Therefore,as the science and technology booms worldwide,the translation of research article becomes increasingly important.The translation for science and technology not only could speed up the level of civilization but also has closely related to the development of academic research.To better study the translation of research articles,the translation purpose should be firstly determined.Based on Reiss' s text type theory,which identifies that research articles belong to informative texts,its purpose is to deliver information.Based on systemic functional grammar,the genre features of research articles are studied and the respective translation strategies are analyzed.Based on quantitative analysis,this report has studied the ideational function and its translation from the perspective of the grammatical metaphor,the interpersonal function and its translation from the perspective of mood and modality,and the textual function and its translation from the perspective of theme-rheme structure and information structure under the guidance of systemic functional grammar.Through the study,summaries are shown as follow: from the perspective of ideational function,metaphorical form makes the expression more objective,formal and concise.The widespread application of passive sentences and nominalization fully reveals the ideational function of research articles.From the perspective of interpersonal function,the translation of hedges highly influences the objectiveness and preciseness of the research articles,so translators should pay special attention to the semantic meanings of them in the process of translation.From the perspective of textual function,the information structure of research articles should notice the pattern from given information to new information,which influence not only the readability of the translated text,but readers' comprehension of the target language.Finally,based on quantitative analysis and case study,some translation strategies are provided as follows: after identifying that research articles belong to informative texts,itspurpose is to deliver information,so a simple and direct translation method shall be adopted basically.For realizing the ideational function,grammatical metaphor is always applied to express the objectiveness and preciseness of the research articles.Congruent form and metaphorical form have distinctive communicative functions.Translators should understand the content of source text,then translate it into congruent form and then to the metaphorical form when processing the grammatical metaphor.When translating the modal verbs,the different meanings of the modal verbs should be firstly determined.For realizing the textual function,the source text should be translated based on theme-rheme structure.Linear translation and inverted-order translation are adopted in this process.Refer to the translation of information structure;the translation method should conform to the pattern from given information to new information.
