Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to study the status and role of the principle of individual in Schopenhauer’s philosophy. The first chapter studies the concept of the principle of individual, examines the relationship between the principle of individual and sufficient reason, and the content of the principle of individual itself, and its reference to ancient Indian philosophy. The second chapter deals with the positive use of the principle of individual, which we call a "declining path" : From the nature of the world "will",through the individual principle, the will of their own step by step into the object of the world’s specific things. The third chapter reveals an opposite path, the starting point is as an individual: individual people in order to break free of the world’s yoke, there are two roads can achieve the essence. The first road is art,and the second path is the denial of the will through the abstinence. The common premise of the two roads is that they all require the elimination of the principle of individual.Only the abolition of the principle, art and ethics can be generated. So we can see that the principle of individual in Schopenhauer’s philosophy play a role in two aspects. It is not only the process of the world to follow the principle,or the individual in the process of seeking to escape the object to be denied and canceled. It is this special role that determines the individualized principle in Schopenhauer’s philosophy.
