The source text of this translation task is excerpts of Guy Cook‘s Translation in Language Teaching: An Argument for Reassessment,including the introduction and the fourth chapter of the book.The content of the introduction covers: the status quo of translation in language teaching,reasons for its rejection,the argument of its role in language teaching,the basic structure and content of this book;some questions about this book,and some new terms used in this book.The fourth chapter in the first part is about the question of ?what is translation?? which is chosen as the main part of the translation task apart from the introduction.To know the definition of translation is conducive to confirm the role of translation from the perspective of language teaching,to provide reference for language learners,translators and language researchers.As Cook(2010:54)says that ?understanding the nature of translation,and the problems it involves,is essential not only to an understanding of TILT,but useful for language learners themselves?.Thus,the translation task could be of great significance to an MTI student in his or her translation skills and academic thinking.The translation report analyzes the problems and difficulties encountered in the process of translation from the perspective of cognitive context under the guidance of relevance theory.Relevance theory holds that communication is an ostensive-inferential process.As a communicative action,the communication interlocutors of translation are the author,the translator and the target reader.The translator,having the dual identity of the original reader and the translation producer,tries to convey the communicative intention of the original author and to realize the expectation of the target reader.A bridge between the author of the original and the target reader is built in the source and target texts.In order to achieve a reliable and smooth translation and the best relevance between the target text and the original text,translators need to constantly adjust their cognitive environment to find the most appropriate and accurate expressions.The translation report is divided into two chapters.The first chapter consists of the source text and the translated text,and the second is the translation report.The second chapter is composed of five parts.The first part is the description of the translation task,which includes the introduction to the translation task,the reasons for selecting the source text,the significance of doing this translation task,and the theme and style of the source text.The second part is about the translation process,including the preparation for translation,translation process,revision,and problems and difficulties encountered in translation.The third part is the discussion of the theoretical framework including relevance theory,cognitive environment,and relevance theory in translation.The fourth part is the case study in which the problems and difficulties in translation are analyzed from the perspective of cognitive context in the relevance theory.The last part is a general summary of the translation task and translation report which contains some findings in the reflection on the translation in relevance-theoretical framework,and limitations of the translation and the report as well.
