In the course of learning English,it is stated that grammar plays an important role in improving the students‘ ability to use English efficiently.Therefore,grammar teaching has become an important part in English teaching.However,since the New English Curriculum Standards were implemented,teachers in senior high school have different views on grammar teaching in senior high school,so grammar teaching goes into two different kinds of extremes: one part of teachers continue to use the traditional 3P method and teachers focus on the isolated interpretation to teach grammatical rules;while the other teachers attempt to weaken or ignore the teaching of grammar system.Because of these two cases,students are losing interest in grammar teaching.What‘s more,a large number of students have no ability to use grammatical rules in the contexts appropriately.Grammatical forms are related to its contexts closely.Different grammatical forms depend on different contexts,and different contexts depend on different grammatical forms.This research used context teaching approach to improve the inefficiency of grammar teaching in senior high school.Therefore,research questions are put forward as follows:(1)Can context teaching approach improve students‘ grammatical competence? If yes,which dimension improves most: form,meaning or use?(2)Can context teaching approach stimulate students‘ interest in learning grammar?66 students from two intact classes of Grade 2 in No.1 Senior High School in Tianshui were chosen as subjects.Class 2 is assigned as experimental class(EC)while Class 18 is control class(CC).In EC context teaching approach is adopted,while in CC 3P procedure is followed.The teaching experiment lasted for two weeks.Two kinds of research instruments were used in the research: questionnaire and two tests(pre and post test).Questionnaire is employed to see whether students‘ interest of learning grammar is stimulated after the experiment.The results of two tests will show whether student‘s grammatical competence will be improved,specifically from the dimensions of form,meaning or use.The author analyzed all the data by means of SPSS16.0.The analysis of data shows:Context teaching approach can arouse senior students‘ interest in learning grammar.According to different fresh contexts,the students took part in the class more actively.Judging from the data of the tests and the questionnaire in the research,students are interested in grammar learning and show preference for context teaching approach.Context teaching approach can improve senior students‘ English grammatical competence,especially on meaning and use.Finally,it makes form,meaning and use of grammar a perfect combination.As the result,it improves students‘ grammatical competence.In a word,context teaching approach can stimulate the senior high school students‘ interest in learning English grammar,improve their grammatical competence and has a greater effect on learning grammar than the traditional 3P method.
