A Study On Word Omissions And Strategies In The Process Of English-Chinese Translation

This translation report is based on a ten-thousand-word English-Chinese translation task.The original text is selected from The Map: A Beginner's Guide to Doing Research in Translation Studies written by Jenny Williams and Andrew Chesterman,famous English scholars in translation study.This book mainly introduces the methods of translating research.After its publishing,it was widely welcomed,especially in China.Now it has become a guide book for Chinese students who are majoring in MTI.With ten chapters,this book points out some basic concepts and methods of translation in details,which has great significance for translation study and practice.This report was written after the completion of Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of The Map: A Beginner's Guide to Doing Research in Translation Studies.The report focuses on the problems of word omission and tries to find strategies to avoid such problems when translating.Among those related researches about omissions,they mainly center on Chinese-English interpretation(simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation),while researches focusing on English-Chinese translation are limited.Therefore,it is expected to be helpful for the existing research to study word omissions in the process of English-Chinese translation.The report includes five chapters.The first chapter introduces the reason,the significance and the research content.The second chapter is the process of the project,including the preparation,the translation process and the revision.In the next chapter,from the aspects of notional words and functional words,the cases and causes of word omission are listed.In the fourth chapter,some strategies are put forward to solve the above problems.Text coherence,grammar,translation skills and verification are necessary measures.The last chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes what the author has learned from this translation project.
