Traditional translation studies mainly focus on the linguistic equivalence of two versions.Since the 1970 s,researchers discovered that translation never occurred in a vacuum, but was influenced by socio-cultural background. The research perspective gradually shifted from linguistic orientation to cultural orientation.André Lefevere(1992),a representative of the manipulation school, proposes that translation is actually a rewriting of the original text. All rewritings demonstrate the manipulation by certain ideology and/or certain poetics in a certain way at a given time.Translators at a specific historical period are influenced by the two major factors in their process of translation.By the end of the 19 th century,Sherlock Holmes was translated into China and enjoyed great popularity among Chinese readers.Translation played an important and indispensable role. The translator rewrote the original text so as to make it conform to the dominant ideology and poetics in late Qing and early Republican period.Recently, more and more scholars attach great importance to the translation of detective novel in late Qing and early Republican period as well as its far-reaching significance. While in the course of those researches, the translation during that time is often criticized as being unfaithful to the original. With the cultural turn in translation studies, many scholars started to explain this phenomenon from cultural orientation and place it into specific social and historical environment in order to carry out some more complete and objective translation studies. This thesis attempts to pose a detailed analysis of Zhou Shoujuan's translation of A Study in Scarlet from the perspective of André Lefevere's rewriting theory.By placing it in a broad social and cultural context, this thesis places its emphasis on how the dominant ideology and poetics in late Qing and early Republican period manipulate the source text selection and translation strategy employment by analyzing relevant examples in A Study in Scarlet..
