This is a translation report of the fifth chapter excerpted from the book Teaching the Brain to Read. The author is Judy Willis, who combines the training in neuroscience with years of classroom experience. As an authority in the field of learning-centered brain research, she has proposed a few effective strategies about how to read based on her research. The selected section is the fifth chapter, mainly introducing how to build and keep vocabulary, which aims to improve the ability of translation, broaden horizon and introduce effective reading methods. This book, characterized by scientificity, technicality, and theorization, demonstrates research methods and results objectively, showing readers the operation mechanism of the brain. In the process of translation, the translator is guided by the text typology theory of Peter Newmark.According to this theory, the translator follows the principle of communicative translation, which is suitable for information-oriented texts. In order to convey information accurately, the translator pays more attention to the content of the original text rather than its form.Translation difficulties mainly are terminologies and long sentences. For terminologies, based on the Internet, the translator renders them into Chinese by pictures, books, literatures and interpreting. In terms of long sentences and punctuations, numerous techniques are employed, such as conversion, inversion, cutting and blending and so on.The translator regards the target readers as the center and expresses the meaning of the original text by fluency words accurately.Through this practice, the translator not only learns the way of reading, but also improves translation ability greatly.
