A Study On Translation Of Neologisms In Fantasy AVTs

The information era has witnessed a boom in economy,science,agriculture and culture as well.The modern technology contributes to accelerating intercultural communication which is no longer a form limited to books.A large multitude of popular music,film and television works have flooded into our country.These film and television works are often loaded with local culture.For Chinese audience to fully understand those culture-loaded works and overcome the barrier of language,there must be an intermediary.Thus,in this case,subtitle translation emerges.As foreign film and television works become prevalent,subtitle translation serves as a catalyst to help Chinese audience understand foreign works.What is noticeable is that neologism in AVT is a worthy research topic in that 1)accelerated globalization heightened the tempo of intercultural communication,in which neologism in AVT plays an interesting and yet significant part;2)there has been a dearth of research on neologism in AVT translation;3)given the significance of neologism in AVT translation,it is worthwhile to do some research to touch upon the relations between the emerging fansub groups and the co-called crowd-sourcing phenomena in studies of subtitling.The data I choose for this academic endeavor is the translatioal treatments of neologisms in the first season of American fantasy AVTs Game of Thrones,and I intend to approach the data by textual analysis and componential analysis,in the hope of seeking out the following research questions:1)The classification of English neologisms in fantasy AVTs;2)On the basis of English classification,comparing and contrasting the translation strategies of neologisms employed by three fansub groups;3)Grounded in the Chinese audience's acceptance and feedback to the different subtitle translations,figuring out the significance and influence of subtitle translation under the context of new technology to language contact and language development.This thesis starts with the introduction to research background,purpose and significance and its structure,and literature review on Game of Thrones,subtitle translation.And in order to compare and contrast the subtitle translations of neologisms in fantasy AVTs,in what is to follow,the thesis presents the definition and classification of neologisms in English.By means of materials collection and data analysis,what can be concluded is that neologisms in Game of Thrones are in the form of compounding,words from proper names,news words borrowed from other languages and adding new meaning to existing words.Moreover,George R.R.Martin,the author of A Song of Ice and Fire,more often than not,creates neologisms in toponym,people's names and their titles,and animals.In this regard,textual analysis and componential analysis methodology are fully employed to explicate the different translations of neologisms.In what follows,this thesis will conduct an in-depth exploration of the influence of general working procedure of fansub groups on language contact,as well as the audience's response to different subtitle translations via interview and questionnaire.It is suggested that the audience have expectations of domestic translation for subtitle translation of neologisms,which is of great importance to provide the translation guidance for neologism translation in fantasy AVTs.Meanwhile,the impact and significance of fansub groups has on language contact and language development will be mentioned.Fansub groups heighten the spreading speed of subtitles to enable the audience procure the latest information,and neologism subtitles enrich the corpus of language.Thus,in the spread of neologism subtitle translation,the writer puts forward that subtitle translation of neologisms in fantasy AVTs is supposed to be audience-oriented and audience-centered,by seeking functional equivalence or adding notes in screen,with the purpose of transmitting the unique exotic culture in fantasy AVTs with a frank and easily-understandable language in the hope of arousing the audience's interest and offering them a pleasant viewing experience.
