| In the studies of subtitle translation,scholars have put more emphases on Skopos Theory,Hermeneutics,and Relevent Theory and used them to study the translation theories and target-texts.However,they have ignored the literary stylistic features of film translation and their strategy choice in subtitle translation.The author of the thesis will discuss the equivalence between the source-text and the target-text from the points of roles’ characteristics,rhetoric features and cultural connotations,and how the translators choose the translation strategies.By doing these,the author will further introduce literary stylistics into the study of film translation.A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels written by American novelist George R.R.Martin.Game of Thrones is the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire,which was translated from English into Chinese by Tan Guanglei and Qu Chang in 2005 and Published by Chong Qing Press.The book has been translated into three volumes and has introduced the novel world and various characters to Chinese readers.In recent decade,numerous American plays have been popular in the world.Game of Thrones has won 12 awards in the 67th Emmy Award,which has been named as the top work of American plays in the Primetime.The study of the subtitle translation of Game of Thrones is very weak and the papers are very few.It is the first time for the writer of the thesis to analyze the literary features and the character features of the subtitles and the equivalence and strategy application in subtitle translation from the point of literary stylistics.On the basis of literary stylistics,the author of the thesis will study the characteristics of the actors or actresses,rhetorical and cultural equivalence and variation of Game of Thrones.The author of the thesis has carefully read the related theories about literary stylistics and got such conclusions by analyzing the translating strategies and concrete examples:1)The subtitle translator should also try his best to meet the reading demand of the target-text readers;2)The roles’ characteristics,the rhetoric and the culture need the subtitle translator to translate in the aspects of both equivalence and variation;3)The subtitle translator should not use certain translating skill to translate certain phenomenon from the beginning to the end.He always used different kinds of translating skills to translate one phenomenon in different situations.All the discoveries found in the thesis can offer a new theoretical point and detailed help to similar subtitle translation studies.By the study of the thesis,the author not only wants to show the fact that the success of the subtitle translation of Game of Thrones is un-separated from the proper strategies of equivalence and variation of the source-text and the target-text,but also wants to prove the accessibility of equivalence and variation in the subtitle translation from the aspect of literary stylistics,which has broadened the researching viewpoint of subtitle translation and contributed a lot to deepen the study of Game of Thrones.The successful introduction of Game of Thrones in China offers a reference and enlightenment to Chinese readers.Film translators should follow literary stylistics rules and properly use equivalence and variation in subtitle translation. |
