Translation Of The Brown Birds From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

In this thesis,the translator chooses Ge Fei's novel The Brown Birds as a source text and mainly discusses the difficulties the translator encounters in the process of translating as well as some specific translation methods adopted when solving these difficulties under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence.The translator finds that The Brown Birds not only has twisting plots and confusing narrative techniques,but also contains lots of metaphorical sentences,personified sentences,and long and complex sentences.Besides,different culture backgrounds and language structures also make it more difficult for the translator.Thus,how to convey the semantic information of the original text and make the translation more natural and adoptable have become the focus of the translator.Functional Equivalence is the core part of Eugene Nida's translation theory and it has a great impact on the translation practice.Functional Equivalence focuses on the reader's response,which requires translators to achieve the same reading feeling and understanding among the target readers as that of the original readers as much as possible.According to Functional Equivalence,translation doesn't mean translating the source text into the target text word by word.Instead,it emphasizes that translators should convey the real intention of the original author.A qualified translator should be able to represent the original meaning,adjust the language structures and pay attention to the reader's response.As for the different expression ways of The Brown Birds,the translator adopts specific translation methods,which in turn prove that Functional Equivalence is feasible.The report gives detailed explanations from the following three aspects:metaphor,personification,and long and complex sentences based on the translation materials.Besides,the translator adopts some specific translation methods,like literal translation,free translation,addition,division,etc.to achieve equivalence between the source text and the target text so as to call forth the same response among the target readers as much as possible.Moreover,it is hoped that the report will provide some useful insights for other translators.
