| The main content of this thesis is to explain and analyse the practice theory of the (?)(?)rangama S(?)tra. The sutra elaborates the theory and practice of Buddha Dharma, and it revolves around methods of practicing it.In accord with different people’s nature, the methods of practicing Buddha Dharma in the sutra could also be classified as sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation.Gradual cultivation, begins when one has understood what Buddha Dharma means. And sudden enlightenment itself is practice. This thesis has four chapters. The first chapter illustrates the main structure and content of the sutra, through the analysis of the full title of the (?)(?)rangama Sutra and the correspondence between the full title and the content of the sutra. Then it uses the"ontology, phase and function" model in Awakening of Mahayaa Faith to clarify the core concept of the (?)(?)rangama Sutra. And the method of practicing Buddha Dharma is contained in "function".The second chapter is to demonstrate the principle of practice.Firstly,it is discussed that the reason for the necessity of practice is that most people studying Buddhism prefer listening to it and thinking about it and generally ignore the practice, which probably leads to being stuck in the language or thoughts. In that way,it is difficult to achieve deep understanding of Buddha Dharma and to penetrate into it,so it is significant to practice it.Secondly,it clarifies that the six roots of sensations are the roots of delusions and afflictions, and any one of the six roots is the key to verifying Bodhi Nirvana. The sutra says it is necessary to choose the suitable root and go deep into practice. The third chapter is the interpretation of "the Perfect Penetration Method of the Ear Faculty"(er gen yuan tong).Firstly,it explains the reason why the sutra chooses"the Perfect Penetration Method of the Ear Faculty" as the best method of gradual cultivation is not only that it is the most suitable method for people in the Saha World to practice dharma, but also that the ear faculty(srotra-indriya)has the unique advantage in the eighteen dh(?)tus.Secondly,it explains that initiating bodhicitta is the prerequisite of practicing "the Perfect Penetration Method of the Ear Faculty".Finally,it illustrates the sequence of practicing "the Perfect Penetration Method of the Ear Faculty":the first stage is to corroborate "the illusion of person’ and transcend the worldly dharmas;the second stage is to corroborate "the illusion of dharmas" and transcend transmundane dharmas;the third stage is to corroborate the unproduced nature of all existences and transcend both worldly dharmas and transmundane dharmas. The fourth chapter illustrates the method of practice in sudden enlightenment.First,it indicates that sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation are two approaches to Buddha Dharma, just in accord with different people’s nature.Secondly,it discusses the connotation of the method of practicing sudden enlightenment and clarifies that the method is the same as the practice of Zen.For people without the intention of grasping, the enlightenment is equated with practice, and there is no fixed method to practice, because all actions or practices of enlightened persons are the status of their common days.Actually,in the view of enlightened persons, practice just means a name with no definitive nature, because they have no intention of grasping practice or non-practice.Therefore,for enlightened persons there is no sudden enlightenment or gradual cultivation. And both sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation can be established if necessary. |
