This translation report is based on the translation practice of “Actus Reus”,Chapter 2 of Textbook on Criminal Law,which is written by the famous British legal scholar,Michael Allen, who has an immense reputation in the field of law. This book covers a brief introduction to the criminal law of England and Wales, which includes actus reus, mens rea, negligence and strict liability and so forth. It is a readable textbooks for readers, for it not only introduces some core theories of criminal law of England and Wales but also quotes a lot of cases to illustrate them accordingly.Over the past three decades, although China has made an outstanding progress in developing the country under the rule of law,its legal system is far from being perfect in handling new problems arising as the change of our society. Thus,to absorb good experience from the legislation of the western countries is an effective way to construct and standardize our laws.As a result, the author chooses this book as the source text of this translation in order to provide the Chinese learners who want to have a better understanding of the criminal law of England and Wales.During the translation, the author finds that complex sentences frequently appear in the source text and this makes it difficult for us to translate the legal text from English into Chinese. Therefore, this translation report briefly demonstrates the definition, characteristics, typical types and previous studies on the translation of the complex sentence firstly, and then proposes some translation techniques for complex sentences in Textbook on Criminal Law combing with the translation practice. The author hopes that this translation report may provide legal translators with translation experience and translation techniques for complex sentences and Chinese legal experts with new ideas.
