A Study On Critical Reading Teaching In Senior High School

There are several problems in the current English reading class,such as the traditional and single teaching mode,the ignorance of reading strategies,the failure to grasp deeper meaning of the text and students' lack of sense of participation,etc.How to improve students' reading ability and thinking ability in our reading class?Introducing critical reading teaching into senior high school is an important way to promote students' deep reading and improve students' critical thinking.Based on the Constructive Learning Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis Theory,the researcher carried out an action research in a senior high school in Nanjing.The study aims to answer the following two questions:How can we carry out critical reading teaching?What advantages does critical reading teaching bring to students' leaning and teachers' teaching?The study lasted a year,from September,2016 to June,2017.The study subjects are two classes of grade one.One class is the experimental group where critical reading teaching is conducted while the other is the control group who are taught by the traditional teaching mode.During the teaching of the experimental group,the researcher tries to interpret the text in depth,design various critical reading activities with thinking content,and apply the critical reading strategies to all aspects of teaching.Reading tests,questionnaires,interviews,writing tests and critical thinking tests are adopted to collect the statistics.Through theoretical study and teaching practice,the study summarizes the following ways to carry out critical reading teaching:1)focusing on the characteristics of critical reading teaching and emphasizing the deep interpretation of the text;2)selecting the text material that contains the speculative elements and cultivating student's dialectical view of the writer;3)mastering the critical reading focuses on different genres and teaching in accordance with its characteristics;4)conducting critical reading teaching mode by interpreting the title of the text,designing the problem chain,drawing the mind map,cultivating the problem consciousness,implementing the reading output and increasing the frequency and opportunity of students using critical reading strategies.And through the analysis of statistics of survey,interview and pre-and post-tests,the study observes the following advantages critical reading teaching brings to students'leaning and teachers' teaching:1)improving students' reading ability,reading speed and reading performance;2)doing great help to stimulating students' reading interest;3)enhancing students' awareness of using reading strategies and significantly promoting students' ability to predict,summarize,analyze and infer;4)improving students' critical thinking ability so that students can learn to analyze the text multi-dimensionally and having a certain positive transfer effect on writing,thus improving students' writing ability;5)urging teachers to reflect on their own reading teaching so as to improve the quality of teaching.Therefore,the researcher believes that it is of positive significance to carry out critical reading teaching in senior high school.Students not only improve their reading scores and reading interest,but also learn to analyze,appreciate the reading text.By this means they may have a deeper understanding of the reading text,forming their own opinions and attitudes.
