The 21 th century is the century of knowledge and technology, and the English of Science and Technology(EST)has played a significant role. Therefore,it is urgent to improve the quality of the translation of EST texts.Relevance Theory is of an instructive meaning for the translation practice, and this thesis aims to study the translation strategies for the translation of some typical grammatical structures of EST from the perspective of relevance theory.First, this thesis briefly introduces the development and the ostensive-inferential communication pattern of the relevance theory and proposes its interpretation for the translation practice. The translation of EST text has an ostensive-inferential essence. In the translation, translators must infer the real intentions of the source text authors, and then try to realize the optimal relevance between the source texts and the target texts when translation. To realize these goals, the necessary cognitive elements and other dynamic factor have to be considered too. This thesis studies the translation methods of some typical grammatical structures, such as the long sentence, the participle structures, the nominalization structures and the passive voice. In the translation of long sentence and the passive voice, the translation strategy applied is to analyze the sentence structure and figure out the logical and grammatical relations between the clauses and the main sentences;in the translation of nominalization structures, the relations between the preposition of and the nouns after it should be analyzed and for the participle structures, the logical relations between it and the main sentences have to be analyzed. This paper discusses the instructive meaning of the relevance theory for the EST translation to deepen our understanding about the translation of the English of Science and Technology. |
