Idioms are the most distinctive groups in the language system.Because of the representativeness and particularity of idioms, linguists and some relative scholars have always focused on it.Since "The Thirty-six Strategies" spread out,it has a high status in the military field.Later, the idioms are also widely used and spread among the common people and many people study it from a variety of perspectives. This thesis mainly focuses the idioms translation in the Thirty-six Strategies and compares the translation differences of two English versions by using two main theories in the intercultural communication. It is of great difficulty for a non-native learner to have a good grasp of idioms by just figuring out from the simple addition of its constituent parts. The understanding of idioms cannot be separated from its culture. And there are many idioms in The Thirty-six Strategies. Each subtitle of The Thirty-six Strategies is an idiom. The author takes two English versions to analysis the reasons why the translations are different from the perspective of intercultural communication by using the Cultural Identity Theory and the Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory. This thesis uses documentary analysis method and contrastive analysis method. It discusses three questions:1.what is the difference between the two English versions;2.what are the cultural reasons of being different;3.What implications can offer for the translation of Chinese idioms into English from the perspective of intercultural communication. As for different historic, religions and region culture, people from different countries would have different modes of thinking and speaking ways, national historical tradition and customs, which would influence the translation.Idiom translation is more a process that happens between two different cultures than one that happens between two kinds of language.By discussing the two English versions,we can clearly find out which version can better transfer the original culture.A translator must have cultural awareness as well as linguistic awareness. It is a translator's responsibility to promote the culture to exchange with the world.
