The Effect Of Parenting Style On High School Students’ Career Maturity

Abstract/Summary:
According to Super’s(1953)theory of career development,high school students are in the second stage of their career development-exploratory stage.It is an important period of individual career development,while career maturity is an important measure of individual career development.In the process of growth and development,adolescents are influenced by the family-especially their parental influence on individuals.Their parenting styles play an important role in the growth of children.The external influences of parents often have an effect through the internal factors of individual.Among them,the achievement motivation is an internal factor of the individual,which has an important driving effect on the individual and also is an important entry point for studying individual career.Therefore,the main purpose of this study is to analyze the status and characteristics of senior high school students’ career maturity and to study the influence of parenting styles and achievement motivation on career maturity of senior high school students,and to further explore the achievement motivation mediation effect between parenting styles and career maturity.So as to enrich relevant empirical research while understanding the development of contemporary high school students’career maturity in our country and to provide a theoretical basis and empirical evidence for career counseling programs for senior high school students.This study takes the approach of questionnaire survey,which includes the Achievement Motive Scale,s-EMBU-C and Career Maturity Scale.The study was conducted at two high school students in Tianjin,a total of 505 questionnaires were distributed,there into,we received 480 copies with 401 valid questionnaires.The statistical analysis reached the following conclusions:(1)In this survey the highest score is decisiveness factor,and the lowest score is utilitarian factor.(2)There are significant gender differences in senior high school students’ career maturity;students who have received career training guidance have significantly higher career maturity than those who have not received training guidance;the only child’s career maturity is significantly higher than that of non-only-child;the level of career maturity of class leaders and not class leaders is not significantly different in general,but the class leader is significantly higher than others in activeness factors.(3)Achievement motivation scores and motive to pursue success are positively correlation with career maturity;motivate to avoid failure is negatively correlation with career maturity;parents’ emotional warmth dimension is positively correlation with career maturity.(4)Motive to pursue success is a mediator between mother’s warmth dimension and career maturity.
