With more and more excellent English TV series being introduced into China through the increasing popularity of the Internet, the foreign culture becomes common to be seen by ordinary people in China. The TV play of Downton Abbey attracts the eye of the ordinary people in this trend. Its details may not be dramatical, but it tells the unique and the unduplicated history and noble spirits of the old capitalist countries in-depth.It displays a family in honors and hardships set in a big Age.It gains worldwide reputation and admiration by virtue of the primitive and refined pictures, the exquisite and vivid figures, the plot twists and the touching story. However, how to understand and help the ordinary people to understand this foreign culture becomes a critical problem for scholars to reflect on.In this paper,Downton Abbey, the above hot English TV series was chosen as a carrier to tell us how to understand and help ordinary people to understand the foreign culture effectively. To better understand this TV series, the perspective of the conversational implicature was chosen to study it.In the paper, the main theory, conversational implicature was briefly introduced, then the contents of the conversational implicature was detailed, such as the notion of conversational implicature, its classifications, and characteristics.Conversational implicature is classified into general implicature(no need of context)and particular implicature(special context)which can also be classiffied into standard implicature(no violating of cooperative principle)and non-standard implicature(violating of cooperative principle). Its characteristics are calculability,cancellability,non-detachability,non-conventionality and indeterminacy. And then the cooperative principle the perspectives to study the conversational implicature was introduced. The politeness principle and face theory were also introduced to better understand the conversational implicature as well. The conversational dialogues in the first season of the Downton Abbey were chosen to display the conversational implicature behind the dialogues. The materials will be displayed in tables first and then analyzed specifically from maxims of cooperative principle. The conversational implicature produced by violating maxims to reflect the aspects of TV series will be counted in another table in order to get a summary on the pragmatical functions of conversational implicature, which will be showed in the chapter four..There are more than ninety examples in total in the paper to analyze the implicature behind them.In the paper, the author tries its best to display to us what the real meanings of the characters and display us how to understand relations between the implicatures and characters, the times, the certain quality of people there and the plot by violating the cooperative principle. And through data analysis,it could be found out that the implicatures of the dialogues of the characters by violating the maxims of cooperative principle show the certain personalities of the characters.Through violating the maxims of cooperative principle,it could be find out that,Mary and Robert are the representatives of the aristocratic class who insist in defending the old principles but also try to accept the new changes.Violet is a stubborn conservative who refuses the new changes in minds and life brought by the industrial revolution.Sybil and Gwen are the welcomer of the new changes.Sybil's mind is awakening for equality between different classes.Gwen is trying to look for a new life in mind and action.Matthew and Isobel are the new blood flowing into the peaceful but decaying life in Downton Abbey. They brought new attitudes and new ways to life and new mindset to think in life.Other servants are still struggling for the basic and cozy life in the Downton Abbey. Some of them are even doing bad thing to seek for their own benefits such as Thomas who sets a trap for Bates with an attempt to replace Bates' position in the Downton Abbey. The implicature by violating the maxims of cooperative principle also shows Aristocratic Culture, such as the real relations of marriages between nobles, etiquette culture, the common states of the ladies at that time, family atmosphere between the boss and the employers in the Downton Abbey, the inheriting system culture in the Downton Abbey and among the nobles, the fraternity culture in the Downton Abbey, and the culture of the gentleness and cultivation among English gentlemen and ownership.By flouting the maxims of cooperative principle, the implicature that comes out shows the times changes in the big Age reflected in the spirits among the classes such as the resistance for new development, the budding state that people in the mind seek for another life and improve themselves and the feminist. And the implicature produced by flouting the maxims of cooperative principle also displays the certain quality of English people, humor of different people and their expressive manner and it also promotes the plot through implicature from different characters and attracts the eyes of people to expect more about the following development. In total, the implicature comes from the dialogues of people and it shows the personalities of people who say it,the background the conversation takes places and the quality of people who utter it,the culture rooted among the classes. It promotes the development of the plot under the intention of the author as well.Through the analysis, the paper tells that through analyzing the implicature of the dialogues,it could help understand the foreign culture and help ordinary people to understand the different cultures better.Under the diversified culture background, this action might benefit the harmony of the interpersonal relationship..
