The C-E Translation Report On Feasibility Study Of Holistic Digital Transformation In Sudan

Translation is not only the transformation process of language symbols but also the transmission of information content.Catford,a famous English linguist and translation theorist,puts forward translation shifts based on theoretical model of system functional grammar.He defines “shifts” as “the correspondence of departures from the source language into the target language,” and proposes two types of translation shifts,“level shifts” and “category shifts”,and divides the language into the following four different levels: grammar,lexis,graphology and phonology.Taking the translation project report of Feasibility Study of Holistic Digital Transformation in Sudan as an example,this paper analyzes the application of level shifts and category shifts in the practice of Chinese-English translation guided by Catford’s translation shifts theory in order to provide some guidance for translation practice.As the source document is a feasibility study on media broadcasts,the source language is concise and clear characterized by a lot of technical terms,complex sentences and long sentences.Therefore,when translating titles,the translation should be concise and accurate.When translating technical terms,it is necessary for the translator to consult and refer to authoritative materials;when translating long and complex sentences,it is necessary to adopt translation strategies and techniques flexibly.In addition,Chinese sentences are mostly active voice while English sentences are mainly passive voice.Chinese phrases are not always able to find one-to-one English translations.In many cases,part-of-speech and sentence patterns need to be shifted to achieve authentic translation.In order to solve the above-mentioned translation difficulties and to get the nearest of the source language,the translator analyzes the source text from four aspects: structure shifts,part of speech shifts,unit shifts and text shifts based on translation shifts theory with a serious and responsible attitude towards the project.Part of speech shifts is used for phrase and word translation,structure shifts,unit shifts,and text shifts for sentence translation.Different translation strategies and techniques are adopted for different source sentences in the process of translation,which ensures that the translation is reasonable.The report provides valuablereferences for business report translators,researchers in this field and enthusiasts by analyzing examples and inducting translation techniques.
