As we all know,there are four basic skills in English: listening,speaking,reading and writing but for middle school students,listening is considered the weakest part.Listening comprehension was once regarded as a passive process of accepting foreign information.However,more and more studies have shown that listening comprehension is actually a process that requires the active participation of listeners.Therefore,the current junior middle school students' listening ability is not satisfactory.There are still many problems in English listening teaching in junior middle school.Therefore,it is necessary to find effective ways to improve students' listening ability.This thesis aims to explore the application of schema theory and its strategies in junior middle school English listening teaching.The purpose of this research is to apply the schema theory to junior middle school English listening teaching in order to improve their listening performance.Three questions are introduced in the research: 1.What's the current situation of English listening teaching and learning in Experimental Middle School of Huaibin? 2.How to apply schema theory to English listening teaching in junior middle school? 3.What changes have occurred in listening teaching under the application of the schema theory? In this study,two parallel classes in Huaibin County Experimental Middle School were selected respectively as control class and experimental class for five months.The control class carries on the listening teaching by the traditional teaching method,while the experimental class uses the teaching method under the instruction of the schema theory to carry on the listening teaching.The experiment used pre-test,post-test,interviews and questionnaires to collect data and conducted statistical analysis by using SPSS 21.0.Through teaching experiments,the experimental results shows that listening teaching under the guidance of schema theory can help students change their attitude toward listening,improve their listening ability and develop the listening strategies to a certain extent.It also further proves the feasibility and effectiveness of listening teaching in the schema.At the end of the thesis,according to the major findings and reflections,some pedagogical implications about listening teaching in junior middle school are demonstrated,and some suggestions for the further study are proposed as well.At the same time,this study also proves that in the teaching activities,schema theory has important practical significance for English listening teaching.
