The Impact Of Violent Video Games On Empathy:The Role Of Aggressive Emotion And Cognitive

With the popularity of mobile phones and computers,video games have become an important way for people to enjoy leisure and entertainment.In these video games,the game with violent content occupies a considerable proportion and attracts more and more scholars' attention.Researchers found that these violent video games increased players'aggressive emotion and aggressive cognitive bias,resulting in their desensitization of violent content,and increasing their aggressive behavior and reducing prosocial behavior.Empathy belongs to a kind of prosocial character,and it is a good medicine for promoting good interpersonal communication.A little scholars have studied violent video games and empathy,and found that the short-term and long-term effects of violent video games can lead to the reduction of empathy of individuals.But at present,there are relatively few researches on violent video games and empathy in China.The main concern is the influence of violent video games on aggressive behavior and prosocial behavior,including the mechanism of empathy.The problem of how violent video games affect individual empathy needs further discussion.Therefore,the purpose of this study is to explore the mediating role of aggressive emotion and cognitive bias in the process of the influence of violent video games on empathy through two studies.The first one is to explore the influence of violent video games on aggressive emotion and empathy,with focusing on the mechanism of aggressive emotion in the process of affecting the empathy of violent video games.The scene started,method of questionnaire and eye movement technology combined.By playing violent video games in the laboratory,start the violent video game short-term effect,aggressive emotion and empathy questionnaire was tested.At the same time,the eye movement method was used to record the eye movement in reading the story of empathy.The results showed that:(1)In the state empathy questionnaire measurement,the empathy score of the violent video game group was significantly lower than that of the non-violent video game group participants.In the eye movement data,the violent video game group was given less attention to the negative emotional description of the others,and the cognitive processing was less in the reading.(2)The scores of aggressive emotions in violent video game group were significantly higher than those in non-violent video game group.(3)Aggressive emotion plays a part of mediating role in the process of violent video games affecting empathy,and the proportion of mediator effect to total effect is 0.19.The purpose of the study two is to explore the influence of violent video games on aggressive cognition bias and empathy,with exploring the mechanism of aggressive cognitive bias in the process of affecting the empathy of violent video games.Using scene initiation,behavior measurement and eye movement technology,the short-term effect of violent video game and the empathy measurement are the same as the research one.In this study,the point detection paradigm was used to measure cognitive bias of the subjects.The results showed that:(1)The score of the empathy of the video game group was significantly lower than that of the non-violent video game group.(2)Violent video game group participants had significant cognitive bias towards aggression,showing that violent video game group participants had more attention to offensive words,and the response time was significantly faster than that of non-coherent conditions.(3)Aggressive cognitive bias plays a part of mediating role in the process of violent video games affecting state empathy,and the proportion of mediator effect to total effect is 0.13.
