A Report On Consecutive Interpreting Practice At A Foreign Teacher's Office Hours

This report is based on the consecutive interpreting practice at a foreign teacher's office at a university in Shandong Province.The report is aimed at analyzing the interpreting techniques used as well as the causes of some major errors,especially pauses,omissions,and misinterpretations,and putting forward strategies to solve and improve them.Finally,the interpreter reflected on her own interpreting content,and summarized the main achievements and shortcomings in the consecutive interpreting process so as to provide references for future interpreting practice.This consecutive interpreting report mainly describes the background of the interpreting practice,the process of interpreting,case analysis and post-interpreting reflections.By means of on-site interpreting,audience feedback,and the interpreter's comparison between the interpreting version and the original.The interpreter found out such problems as pauses,omissions,misinterpretations,and probed into the causes of these problems in detail.The main cause for the pauses is that the interpreter failed to understand the speaker's words,or that she lacked the cultural background knowledge.The main cause for the omissions is that the interpreter failed to take notes during the process,which led to the negligence of some contents.The main causes for the misinterpretations are distraction and misunderstanding of the speaker's words.In response to the above problems,this report has put forward countermeasures or skills that can be used in future practices,namely:(1)Strengthen listening practice and the accumulation of cultural background knowledge;(2)Learn to use notes to assist memory,and practice short-term memory ability;(3)Focus on the interpreting task,and learn to analyze the speaker's intentions so as to have an accurate understanding of his/her speech.This practice report also analyzed some techniques used in practice,such as predicting and explanation and provided valuable experience for future interpreting practice.
