| This report is written after the translation of Hitchhikers,a story from the prose collection of Stories of the Sahara by San Mao,a renowned Taiwanese female writer.San Mao’s prose stories usually contain good plots and enjoy strong readability because they cover a wide range of subjects which are full of exoticism.With a simple,romantic and uniquely charming writing style,San Mao expresses her love for human beings,life,freedom and nature.This translation practice is aimed at improving the author’s ability to translate literary works and introducing San Mao’s outstanding works to foreign readers.According to the functionalist Skopos theory put forward by Hans Vermeer in the late 1980 s,the translation process is constrained by various factors;the purpose of a translation determines the translation action;the translator can adopt appropriate translation strategies in accordance with the translation purpose.San Mao’s works are featured with the frequent use of Chinese culture-loaded words,run-on sentences and figures of speech.Therefore,this translator has adopted various translation strategies to faithfully,fluently and adequately transfer the linguistic feature and language style in San Mao’s works so that the version can be faithful to the source text and also conform to the idiomatic expression of the English language.Major difficulties in translating Hitchhikers are analyzed in the report and the following practical translation strategies are suggested:(1)The translation of culture-loaded words are transliteration plus annotation and free translation;(2)The run-on sentences are translated by reorganization and addition;(3)The figures of speech are translated by literal translation and conversion.Through this translation practice,this translator has obtained a deep understanding of San Mao’s prose and improved her own Chinese-English translation skills.It is hoped that useful reference can be found in this report for relevant translations and researches in the coming days. |
