Report On English Translation Of The City Of Springs（Excerpts）

Taking the culture-loaded words in The City of Springs as research object,this report explores the translation strategies including literal translation,literal translation with notes,free translation,transliteration,transliteration with notes,free translation,substitution and omission etc.Culture-loaded words refers to those embodied with specific culture characteristics.And the difference between Chinese culture and Western culture increases the difficulties in the process of translating the cultureloaded words.Functionalists hold the idea that translation is a type of culture transfer,a type of communicative interactive and a cross-cultural event.This report mainly covers the translation strategies applied in the translation of the four categories of culture-loaded words appearing in the original text of The City of Springs.Under the instruction of functional equivalence theory,this report analyzes the translation strategies of the culture-loaded words in The City of Springs.It has been found that translation procedures are justified by translation purpose,and the adoption of translation strategies should regard the realization of translation purpose as the guideline.Foreign people can get a real understanding of our nation through the description of the old Jinan in the 1930 s and 1940 s,especially the real lifestyle and living conditions of Chinese citizens.Meanwhile the Chinese cultural soft power can be fully represented to the whole world,and the purpose of cross-cultural communication can be achieved,which can eventually speed up Chinese culture’s stepping out.
