A Survey On News Headline Translation From The Perspective Of Reported Discourse

On the basis of former studies of reported discourse carried out by scholars at home and abroad,this thesis is an attempt to study the news headline translation from English to Chinese from the perspective of reported discourse and by a critical discourse analysis of the cases from the author’s own translation practice of iNews China Daily.It is found in the study that the headline of news is very often a synthesis of facts and opinions from different news sources such as the insiders,reporters and observers.So headlines can be conceived as a discourse reported from one context to another,and the truth of the news and the position of the reporter are often concealed by its reported modes.Therefore,in order to translate the news headline,translators are expected to identify the reported modes,the reported verbs as well as the news sources where the original texts come from,to distinguish the reporters’ opinion from the news facts,and to have an accurate understanding of the original discourse before carrying out their translation work.It is also noticed in the thesis that the way reported discourse influencing the news headline translation is dynamic and multifactorial,so in order to translate the news headline appropriately,it is necessary for translators to study the whole passage of the original text and take all concerning factors into consideration.It is hoped that humble contributions will be made by the thesis to broaden the scope of reported discourse study,to manifest its application value in news translation,and to help author be a more theoretically informed translator by drawing lessons from the experience.
