The Sinfonia composed for eight solo artists and the orchestra is the works of Lucian-o Berio, the twentieth century Italian composer, who was inspired by the Structuralism pr-oposed by Claude Lévi-Strauss,the French anthropologist and philosopher.Taking Berio's Sinfonia as the study subject, this thesis, enlightened byLévi-Strauss' s Structuralism in the fir-st movement of Mythologiques and combined with other works of Berio, aims to explorethe influence of structuralism on construction, deconstruction and reconstruction, followed by the research in Berio's practice towards symphony in the twentieth century subsequently. This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter, taking the first movement-Model and Logic as the background,is designed to demonstrate the way in which the myth structuralizes the music, through introducing the creation of Sinfonia, the contact between Berio and Lévi-Strauss and Mythologiques sequentially. This chapter will be summarized by an music analyze in the first movement.Thereafter, the second chapter, around the context in the second movement-Diachrony and Synchrony, will describe the association between the origin of Berio's structuralism and the characteristics of Italian composers(i.e.,the fragmentation consciousness and the opera complex). After several discussions on historical review, time travel, the combination of the fact event and the structuralism's Diachrony and Synchrony orderly, this chapter would be ended by a corresponding analysis of the second movement. The target of the third chapter,movement-Global and Local,is to analyze the selection of specific music and text pieces in the certain song position, based on the global and local theory under structuralism, from angles of criticisms of the era, history trace, etc. In short, being hopeful is presented by Berio in the third movement.Lastly, the fourth chapter, mainly concerning the fourth and fifth movements-Deconstruction and Reconstruction,is the review and integration of Sinfonia.According to the theory-achieving understanding by differentiation under structuralism, this chapter plans to conduct an music analysis in those two movements mentioned above and discuss the standpoint that the creation of Sinfonia is an overturn and restoration of symphonic concept.Although most domestically existing research results focus on the techniques in composition methods especially for the “Collage” technique, there is an apparent lack of specialized research on its entirety and ideological significance.Taking Lévi-Strauss as an entry point, this dissertation is expected to explore the deep thought supporting the Collage technique, via interpreting Berio's Sinfonia holistically.
