Under the stimulus of the defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War and the further push by the Reforms in late Qing Dynasty,the number of studying in Japan increased in the early 20th century.In respond to the call to entertain new student and unite educational circles,students studying in Japan established the first collective organization named The guild hall of Chinese overseas students in Tokyo,in the form of The fellow hall and supported by The Qing Government.The guild hall of Chinese overseas students provided a platform for acquaintanceship and intercommunion with students from different regions and schools,and became the source of activity and the core leader of students.The guild hall did well in daily affairs,such as receiving newcomers and recommending schools,investigating and counting student information,providing reading and meeting rooms.And then it win full accreditation from the Chinese Embassy in Japan for sharing the responsibility.To go with the current of the times,the guild hall expanded the functions,it no only deal with internal affairs merely,but slso safeguard the national dignity abroad and defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity by telegram and launching and participating in the anti-imperialist movement home.The guild hall began play the role of the communicative pivot of Chinese mainland and overseas academic community in 1903.But the guild hall exist many inherent problem——fragmented structure,fragmented structure,poor management and so on,since its founding in 1902.It reorganized a new Chinese Overseas Students Association on the original basis in 1905 and then reached its peak.However,with the adjustments of policy of studying abroad and the revolutionary wave rise in Tokyo,the Chinese Embassy's attitude towards the guild hall changed.Meanwhile,political powers infiltrated into the guild hall and fought for leadership in order to achieve political objectives,and than this aggravated a crisis of internal divisions.In addition,the craze of overseas studies turned to cooling and external shocks from Chinese Christian youth association,the guild hall of Chinese overseas students declined.The guild hall was "Semi-official" administration that Chinese Embassy depended on,before the establishment and operation of Overseas Student Supervision,left its own marks on the history of Chinese students studying in Japan.Its development was closely correlated with the trend of overseas student,the changes in the study-abroad policy of China and Japan,and important political forces in the late period of Qing Dynasty.
