Most of Shen Congwen's numerous novels are using first person narrators and in the same narrative style,which is determined by the peculiarities of the narrator.These novels can be divide into several types.One of the most typical type is the eight novels which have much in common in the quality of narrator such as age,occupation,residence and personalities.The narrators being depressed in the process of narratation is the feature of this type of novels to distinguish from other types.Studying on this type of novels can not only exploring the practicability of narrator as the core of narratology,but also probing into the narrative style of some of Shen Congwen's novels and promoting people's understanding of Shen Congwen.My thesis uses methodof analysis,induction,close reading and narrative analysis,dividing into three chapters on how and why the peculiarities of the narrator of Shen Congwen's serveral novels affectits' narrative behavior.The fisrt chapter demonstrates the necessity and feasibility of studying the text via studying the peculiarities of the narrators as well as classifying and generalizing the peculiarities of narrators from the text.The first section discuss the relation between narrator and the text,explaining the necessity and feasibility of studying the text via studying on narrator as well as pointing out the three conditions of narrators meetin g the demands are representing in public,representing as the first person “I”,being character narrators.The second section uses the classifying and generalizing methods to classify the fisrt person novels of Shen Congwen and generalize the peculiarities of narrators as single male young writers resident in city in poor conditions with depressive personality.The second chapter analyses how the typical first person narrators use its' peculiarities to influnence its' narrative behavior.The first section elaborates how the narrators narrating from his perspective in the viewpoint of focus making the text the expres sion of his inner desire.The second section points out the fact that the narrators' internal tendency makes the plot appearing the feature of “revealing”from the perspective of plot fectures.The third section indicates from the fuction of narrative intervention tothe plot that narrators use narrative intervention by revealing and explainning selfcharacter flaw which makes the whole text a character tragedy of the narrators.The fourth section investigatesfrom the perspective of narrative pace that narrators using the form of garrulity intervention for better confiding his feelings of depression by slowing down the narrative pace and producing large paragraph of story time pause.The third chapter analyses the cause of the narrative behavior mentioned above using the theory of narrators and psychology.The first section using MaslouPsychology to illustrate that the imbalance of the multiple personality of narrator is the direct cause of the narrative behvior mentioned above.The second chapter analyses the nature of character narrators illustraing the trouble that narrator and author use the same identity destructs narrators' function and make first person narrrators the advocacy of character.The third chapter analyses the nature of fictional narrative text that narrators follwing the rules of “reality”intend to make his narration rational by using documentary narrative behavior in the fictional text.The epilogue of my thesis previews the content of the main body and come to a conclusion that the peculiarities of the narrators of Shen Congwen's first person no vels affect its' narrative behavior.In this way,it is feasible to study the text from the perspective of narrators and this can also be a deep exploration of narratology study on Shen Congwen's novels.
