In the last decade of the Qing Dynasty,a series of boycott foreign goods movements took place,which had profound social reasons.Firstly,more and more foreign goods were imported into the Chinese market since the Opium War.Due to the varieties tend to be enriched,Foreign goods have experienced a class spread from the upper to the lower levels in China.By the beginning of the 20th century,foreign goods became more popular,it making people from all walks of life had been brought into the unified market.This market has invisibly expanded the scope of the boycott movement,making the boycott a cross-regional and cross-industry mass movement.Secondly,the emergence of modem nationalism has led the Chinese to abandon their psychological and geographical divisions.The emergence of chambers of commerce and other social organizations,as well as non-governmental newspapers and journals,has provided an effective means of mobilization and propaganda for the boycott movement.Promote the linkage of boycotts from different places.The anti-Russian movement,which broke out in 1901,accumulated experience for a series of public movements after that.On the one hand,the anti-American patriotic movement in 1905 was deeply influenced by the anti-Russian movement in the form of organization and mobilization.On the other hand,the boycott of Japanese movement in 1908 inherited the methods and ideas of the anti-American patriotic movement,and became the beginning of the subsequent anti-Japanese movement in modem history.The attitude and measures of the Qing government had a great impact on the process of the people's boycott movement.Because of ignored the legitimacy of the people's movement,the Qing government was unable to conform to the people's will.The policy of suppression was adopted,which made it difficult for the boycott to last and go deep.More and more people recognized the weak nature of the Qing government and stood on the opposite side.Although the achievement of boycott movement in the late Qing Dynasty was limited,it had some profound influences on the society in other aspects.First of all,during the boycott movement,people learned the lessons from the previous anti-imperialist patriotic movement.Insisting on using civilized non-violence as a means to avoid armed interference by the powers.Second,during the boycott movement,the people began to intervene extensively in the diplomatic activities of the country.Third,during the people took part in the boycott movement,meanwhile,they vigorously developed national industry as well,which produced the germination of the national goods movement in the early years of the Republic of China.
