"The Chinese nation" is a new word that appeared in modern times, but it has been highly recognized by the Chinese people in the short time of 116 years. In addition,it has been entrusted with the historical mission of "the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" in the new period.Liang Qichao played an important role in the ideological and public opinion at that time because of his innovative in the concept of "the Chinese nation" and his contribution in its dissemination and development.Later, the concept of "the Chinese nation" had been paid more and more attention by Yang du,Zhang Taiyan,Sun Yat-sen,Li Dazhao and so on.Under the collision of disparate ideas between revolutionaries and reformists, with the political and academic mutual help, the concept of "the Chinese nation" gradually matured and gradually formed the modern connotation of political, cultural and economic community based on national equality. In spite of the fruitful achievements of the academic research on Liang Qichao nationalism, there are few systematic studies on the concept of:the Chinese nation" at present. This paper links the proposition, development and evolution of Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation"with the environment of the formation and development of modern nationalism,so that I could study how it was put forward in the formation of modern nationalism in the late Qing Dynasty.Of course,I also could study how it evolved and developed under the influence of the thought of national self-determination around the May 4th Movement.I try to conduct a longitudinal study through combing the origin of Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation"and the evolution of the development process. In the meantime,I try to compare Liang Qichao with Yang Du,Sun Yat-sen and Li Dazhao in this paper. From this it could be concluded that Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation" had a significant impact at that time. This article mainly consists of three chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the origin of Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation".Under the collapse of the traditional view of the "yi xia" and the introduction of western modern nationalism,Liang Qichao's idea of"the Chinese nation" began to brewing. The second chapter mainly sorts out the process of proposing the concept of "the Chinese nation" by Liang Qichao during the late Qing Dynasty and explores the connotation of its concept.Under the impetus of the background of the times and his personal experience,Liang Qichao's identity with the Chinese community of nations continued to grow.It drove him to introduce the concept of"nationality",vigorously publicize the concept of "China nationality" and propose the concept of "the Chinese nation" firstly. At the same time, the similarities and differences between Yang Du's,the revolutionary's and Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation" are analyzed in depth, which shows the collision of the ideas between them. The third chapter mainly analyzes the evolution of the connotation of Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation" around the May 4th Movement. With the continuous development of China modern nationalism, its construction theme has been changed from "nation building" to "national self-determination".Affected by this, the idea of'the Chinese nation"was established around the May 4th Movement.Liang Qichao was deeply influenced by this background and the personal experience. He developed his idea of "the Chinese nation".At the same time,I try to conduct a longitudinal comparison between Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation" in the late Qing Dynasty and his idea of "the Chinese nation"around the May 4th Movement. From this,I could deeply analyze the connotative development of Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation".In addition,Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation"and the early Marxist--Li Dazhao's idea of "the Chinese nation" are analyzed and compared, which deepens the study on the connotation characteristics of Liang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation".Liang Qichao's idea of'the Chinese nation"was constantly advancing with the times. It also guided his political practice.Although his idea of'the Chinese nation" still existed the limitations of a single culture around the May 4th Movement,it had a great development compared with the late Qing Dynasty, which had escaped the suspicion circle of "Han nationalism"and had even shown the inclusive and multiple integration pattern of the concept of "the Chinese nation".iang Qichao's idea of "the Chinese nation" had greatly enhanced the national identity and sense of belonging of the people, which helped to avoid the fragmentation of the country and cultivated the national spirit of the common effort of the people. It also enabled the people to form a spiritual resonance in the process of publicity, acceptance and recognition, which greatly inspired the patriotic feelings of the people and strengthened the power of the Chinese nation.
