From Jiangnan Trilogy,including Her Face and Peach Blossoms,The Mountain and River in the Dream,and End of Spring in Jiangnan,to the recent work Spring Wind,the spiritual core that GeFei hides and penetrates in the creation of these novels in the new century always points at looking for a spiritual dwelling place for the modern people,helping them keep their ideals and personalities,and regaining warmth and hope in this empty and confusing era.GeFei does not use a direct,pessimistic,combative way to focus on the present.Instead,with the premise of understanding and meditating on the present mental predicament and the complex social reality,he looks back to the Chinese history and tradition.Through the return of time and space,GeFei tries to salvage and provide things that can give reasons and meanings for the present predicament and provide possible answers for individuals to build their own poetic and comforting ways of life in today's social environment.The ingenious way that GeFei creates in these four novels for the puzzling modern people is a way consisting of "Utopian Energy" and "Unnamed Energy"."Utopian energy" means the affirmation and recalling of Utopian feelings and idealism on the level of human and cultural values,while "Unnamed Energy" means reappearing the deep and heavy strength about humanity,civilization and emotions that maybe have been forgotten and hidden through the social development.With his own poetic and compassionate feelings,Ge Fei creates this way to give a positive answer to transcend the present mental dilemma.The main p.art of this thesis includes three chapters.The first chapter mainly discusses Ge Fei's thinking and attitude on "Utopia" in the four novels.Based on the examination and reflection of the collective suffering caused by absurdity of Utopia,Ge Fei recognizes and affirms the importance of the individual spiritual level of the simple and original Utopia.He believes that,through the personal,procedural and secularized process,the "Utopian Energy" can inject new vitality into the weak and shrinking idealism atmosphere,and provide people with the courage and hope to transcend.The second chapter mainly discusses on the "Unnamed Energy",which consists of freedom and authentic human relations in the local folk,the poetic suffering and inner transcendence of the nation in the historical change and the cultural background,and the salvation and relief of love.It gives harmonious and aesthetic pleasure to us,and produces the significance of warmth and hope.The third chapter mainly discusses on the deep motive behind Ge Fei's rational and poetic writing style,including his recognition of the ideological value of Chinese literary tradition,his absorption of Camus' existential philosophical idea and implication,and internal transformation of personal life experience and creative mentality since the middle of the 1990s.
