The Push Pin style of America was developed after World War ?with American native visual communication design style,which represents a new period of the development in American postwar visual communication design.It appeared as an obvious anti-modernism gesture and was famous for its free design.It adopted comprehensive design methods,including widely using historical style.Likewise,it revived American traditional illustration skills.The study on the visual representation of the Push Pin style is mainly based on the representational theory of structuralism.It aims to explore the relationship between visual language and postwar American culture.Therefore,this thesis on the visual representation of the Push Pin style consists of following three aspects.Firstly,the study analyzes the visual language used in the Push Pin style.Representation connects language,meaning and culture,but language is in the center of the representation of operation.As a result,the analysis of the visual language characteristics of the Push Pin style is the starting point.Through analysis,they are manifested in the transparency of the signified relationship,and the symbol combination is dominated by the metonymy order,having profound connotation behind the visual language of the Push Pin style.Secondly,the study analyzes the visual language of the pushpin style from the representation of discourse approach.From the theory of discourse,the Push Pin style is a representation system,also a set of discourse.Special meanings are constructed,such as the definition of Americanness.It represents "Free America","National America" and "Popular America".Therefore,the postwar American culture shapes.In addition,the discourse of the Push Pin style connects with power closely.It creates a new set of knowledge about free design to establish contact with American liberalism.Accordingly,it represents the "freedom" of American and struggles with words other than liberalism.Thirdly,the postwar American culture is not only shaped by various discourse,it also affected by changes in social lifestyle.Consumer society was established in the United States in the postwar era,it represents a shift in social lifestyle and has important implications for postwar American culture.The cultural changes that result from the influence of consumer society will also be reflected in the language.These characteristics of the culture under the influence of the consumer society can be found in the visual language of the Push Pin style.As such,the visual language used by the Push Pin style is both shaping the postwar American culture and being affected by cultural transformation.
