| No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos and Heartbreak of Mental Health in America is the new book of American journalist, novelist and non-novelist Ron Powers. This book shows the story of his two sons fighting against schizophrenia, and describes the history of American mental illness. The translator has chosen two chapters from this book to translate and make an analysis.Proposed by Eugene A.Nida,Functional Equivalence highlights the closest natural equivalent to the source-language message.A functional-equivalence translation is mainly concerned with the equivalence of receptors’ response rather than the equivalence of language forms. And this theory indicates that the target language readers should have substantially the same response as the source language readers do.Under the guidance of functional equivalence, the translator chooses different translation strategies such as free translation, amplification to convey the original content correctly. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is the description of this translation task. The second part introduces the translation process, including the preparations before translation, the first draft, the second draft, and the final version.Part three is the main part.Under the guidance of functional equivalence, different translation methods are used to analyze specific examples. The last part draws the conclusion, listing the unsolved problems and providing an outlook for future work. |
