The translation practice material is selected from Behind Closed Doors,a novel written by the British writer B.A.Paris,portraying the domestic violence hidden behind a seemingly perfect marriage. The novel was published in England in 2016.It had great influence on society. The main character in this novel is Grace whose sister Millie suffered from Down's syndrome.Since Grace herself took the responsibility of taking care of Millie, nobody wants to marry Grace.Later,a lawyer named Jack Angel entered her life,he accepted Millie. He asked Grace to quit her job and marry him.Grace promised Jack's proposal and gave up her career. However,Jack didn't show up at their wedding night.During their honeymoon,Jack dropped his mask.He planned the whole thing. His purpose was to get custody of Grace's sister Millie and then imprison Millie and torture her to death after her adulthood.Grace tried to escape and turned to the police for help for many times. But Jack was very considerate to Grace in front of outsiders, and he never physically bruised Grace. There was simply no evidence for Grace to let anybody believe her.In their marriage,Jack has made constantly mental torture to Grace in a creepy way.Millie gave Grace some sleeping pills she secretly saved and asked Grace to kill Jack.At first,Grace was hesitant. Then Jack lost his case for the first time,Grace took this event as a turning point to give Jack a prescription. She led Jack to the underground cell he had prepared for Millie. And then Grace closed the door and escaped. The basement could not be opened from the inside and Jack eventually died of dehydration. The whole novel has over 80,000 words. The first chapter and the second chapter has been translated under the guidance of Peter Newmark "text type theory".The translator adopted translation methods of semantic translation and communicative translation, using a series of translation skills to deal with the difficulties encountered in the translation process. On the basis of the translation practice, the translator has better understanding of literary translation and the capacity that translators should possess. The whole translation report contains four parts. The first part is the introduction of the translation project, which includes the brief introductions of the source, the writer and her works. And it also includes the significance of this translation project. The second part is the process of the whole translation, including the preparation work for the translation, the first draft, the second draft and the final draft of translation. The third part is analysis of cases.Under the guidance of text types theory, together with the features of translation material, the translator extracts and analyzes some cases. The fourth part summarizes the understanding of the literary translation, the qualities of translators and the inspiration for future development.
