| Ting Tsan was a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist in the republic of China,and a pioneer in the public mental health services.From the perspective of life history and psychobiography,this study summarizes the life course of Ting Tsan based on Ting’s articles,letters,archives and other people’s evaluation,and interprets his career development with the questions of "how Ting Tsan became a psychotherapist" and "what factors influenced Ting’s career development".The psychology course that Ting Tsan studied in Nantong Normal School was his enlightenment course.After admitted to the National Central University,he accepted the formal psychology study,and was impressed by the training in the laboratory.Influenced by the mental health movement,Ting Tsan began to be interested in mental health.After graduation,he applied for further study of the graduate students in the Division of Neurology and Psychiatry of the Peiping Union Medical College and began his mental health work here.After the Japanese occupation of Peiping,Ting Tsan left PUMC and came to Chongqing Central Health Laboratory as director of the Mental Health Department,where he was busy in popularizing and promoting mental health.After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War,he went to the United States to study the popular humanistic psychology and psychodrama.In 1949,he returned to China to participate in the construction of Chinese Academy of Sciences and promoted the establishment of the Institute of Psychology and the development of psychology.From the learning experience of Ting Tsan,the professional training required by the psychotherapist is as follows: ⑴ Academic courses in psychology,psychiatry and sociology.⑵Experimental research,case study,psychological measurement,questionnaire survey and other research methods.⑶Master clinical diagnosis,psychological analysis,interview and other consulting techniques in practice.⑷ A constant learning of frontier theories and consulting techniques in psychology.Based on the early experiences and learning experiences of Ting Tsan’s life,this study concluded that Ting’s career was influenced by social environment,significant others(including peers and teachers),early experiences(including family and school).Specifically,his career choice is influenced by the encounter of parents and peers,social environment his teacher Nan-hsuan M.Woo and mental health movement.His mental health thought mainly inherited from his teacher Lyman and Bingham Dai;His mental health work was helped by Chang-keng Chu and was closely related to his early experiences. |
