Abstract/Summary:
The picture books for children are favored by a lot of parents,because they are illustrated to narrate short and interesting stories,and therefore there is a growing demand for excellent foreign children’s books.Materials selected by the author are from a children’s historical series called You Wouldn’t Want to...The chosen pieces include You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Pony Express Rider,You Wouldn’t Want to Live in a Wild West Town,You Wouldn’t Want to Explore with Lewis and Clark,and You Wozuldn’t Want to Be at the Boston Tea Party,and You Wouldn’t Want to Explore With Drake Sir Francis.The selected materials respectively introduce the rise and fall of the Pony Express,what kind of lives people lived in the 1870s in the western United States,the Lewis and Clarke expedition,the Boston Tea Incident and the beginning and end of the American Revolutionary War,Drake’s opening up of a new waterway-the Northwest Passage.Therefore,this series is conducive to the dissemination of knowledge of world history.Although compensation method is usually utilized in the translation of literary works,in the process of translation,the author found that a quantity of compensation methods has also been applied.However,there are limited researches on the compensation for the translation of children’s historical books.Therefore,the thesis analyzes the translation strategies used in these books,which may contribute certain referential value to the translation of such texts.The practice report is divided into five chapters-The first part makes a brief introduction to the nature and basic content of the translation project,as well as the purpose and significance of the topic chosen.In the second section,the author analyzes and summarizes the current situation of research on translation compensation by domestic and foreign experts and scholars.On the basis of predecessors’ study,the author redefined and classified the translation compensation in which her own theoretical research and translation practice were involved.The third part is the description of the translation project,the preparatory work before translating,the problems the author encountered and the solutions.In the fourth chapter,the author analyzes the guidance of translation compensation strategies to translation practice from three aspects:word compensation,expression compensation and logic compensation.Hence,in order to conform to the reading habits of the translated readers and keep faith to the original texts,necessary translation methods or techniques are much needed.The last chapter is a summary of the entire translation project,and expounding the gains and shortcomings of the translation practice.
