"Les Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry" is now kept by Conde Museum in the Castle of Chantilly near Paris.The art patron Duke of Jean de Berry commission the medieval Nederlander painter Limbourg brothers to illustrate the manuscript."Les Tres Riches du dus de Berry" represents the highest artistic level of medieval illustrations,and is the classic painting of the late medieval international Gothic style.The artists paint the natural scenery and the character of the twelve months of the year,and each painting corresponds to the specific season,suggesting the farmer cultivates,sows or harvests;also aristocratic travel,hunting and feast.The performance of farmer labor and aristocratic life takes up each half of the work.Most of the background is the rural pastoral scenery,dotted with the Duke of Berry's castle.The top of each piece is a semi-circular,painted with a sun chariot and zodiac,symboling the cycle of movement of the sun in the twelfth month.This article analyzes deeply from the era of cultural background,creators and patrons,forms and content,painting language and style in many aspects of "Les Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry" to make up for the vacancies of study."Les Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry"integrates the elegant decoration into the realistic description,combining the natural landscape and character activities in harmony into one.The brushwork is exquisite,and the illustration is high-colored.It plays an important role in the history of the development of landscape painting.Limbourg brothers are famrous for illustration in European art history.They are the representative of the International Gothic style of painting in the late Middle Ages.With keen observation and superb painting techniques to create this work,they earn from the ancestors master of Siena,Florence widely,being the wonderful artists in the late Middle Ages.
