The International Gothic Style became popular in Europe during the late fourteenth century to the fifteenth century, without exception, Italy, which had cherished the classical tradition, also followed the trend. Although at this very time Giotto's discoveries and inventions were carried a stage further and the Early Renaissance was getting under way in Tuscany, Lombardy, Siena and even Florence still continued to be the chief centers of international spirit. Compared with the style of Ancient Rome and the Renaissance, the International Gothic style was unique in the history of Italian arts, but the style of the phase had often been neglected.By studying the comprehensive cultural and historic background, the thesis gives an expatiation upon the International Gothic Style in Italy, and seeks the reasons of the phenomenon and its development. Moreover, the thesis further investigates the inter-relations between the International Gothic Style in Italy, the Italian Early Gothic Style and the Italian Early Renaissance, as well as analyzes the role of the International Gothic Style plays in the history of Italian arts, at the same time expounds its contemporary function.This thesis contains eight parts. Part I explains the concepts of Gothic and the International Gothic Style, Part II narrates the International Gothic Style in Italy. Part III analyzes that the International Gothic Style expresses a kind of revival of earlier Gothic style. Part IV expounds the realistic style in the International Gothic Style in Italy. Part V expatiates on the northern atmosphere in the International Gothic Style in Italy. Part VI analyzes the changes of devotional images in the International Gothic Style in Italy. Part VII elucidates the secular trend in the International Gothic Style in Italy. Part VIII is the conclusion of the thesis.
